The skeletal system is the framework on which the rest of the body is built. The skeleton is made up of bones and the main mineral stored in the bones is calcium; others include phosphorus, magnesium and salts. Bones offer protection to the internal organs. The marrow in bone is where the red blood cells and some white blood cells are produced.

The Cardiovascular system pumps blood around the body and is nearly 90,000 miles long! On average, blood completes a full circuit around the body in approximately one minute. All body organs and tissues need a supply of oxygenated blood and the removal of waste products.

The Nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord and nerve branches. The brain covers consciousness and creativity and controls all body movements. The body and brain are alive with billions of electrical and chemical signals made by the nerve cells {neurons}. These signals are unconscious and keep the body safe and functioning properly. This system works with the endocrine glands to monitor and maintain other systems.

The Endocrine system includes the hormones secreted by the endocrine glands and other organs which circulate in the blood. Also included are other bodily fluids which help the body to maintain an optical internal environment and to initiate body changes that take place at puberty, pregnancy, during ageing and menopause.

The Immune System is the body's security force, protecting the body against invasion from outside and subversion from within. It protects the body against infectious diseases and internal malfunctions. It protects the body from the viruses, bacteria and chemicals that we breathe in from the air around us.

The Lymphatic System functions to drain excess fluid from the body's cells and tissues. It helps in the purification of blood and is a system that filters out bacteria, viruses, foreign substances, debris and toxins. It fights antigens and activates immune cells; this means that it is a defence mechanism for the body. It produces lymphocytes i.e. white blood cells which fight infections and tumour cells (cancer). It also absorbs and distributes fat soluble nutrients all around the body. The lymphatic system supports every other system in the body and it interfaces with other systems e.g. digestive, respiratory and circulatory. It is part of the immune system which is the body's security force, protecting the body against invasion from the outside and subversion from within. Did you know that we have twice as much lymph fluid in our body as blood and that the movement of our lymphatic system is powered by our breath and physical movement? If the movement of the lymph stopped entirely, you would die in a matter of hours. The lymphatic system helps the healing process of the body.

The Respiratory system is the system that helps deliver oxygen from the air that we breathe (via the lungs and skin) into the red blood cells. Then the Cardiovascular System transports these gases to and from all body tissues, supplying vital oxygen and removing carbon dioxide, a waste product of the body processes.

The Digestive System is 30ft of tubing from the mouth to the anus. Its task is the physical and chemical breakdown of food. It stores food, digests it, makes use of nutrients and eliminates waste. A healthy digestive system depends on the proper functioning of the Immune and Nervous System.

The Urinary system is mainly made up of the kidneys and bladder. The kidney forms urine, which is eliminated via the bladder. It eliminates waste and helps to maintain the body's chemical balance. Production of urine is influenced by blood flow, blood pressure, hormones, even sleep and waking!
